Notes on the neo-classical period (the age of reason)

Decline in individualism and movement toward conformity. Move away from emotionalism and toward order and reason. Admiration for writers of ancient Greece and Rome who demonstrated order, logic, restrained emotion, accuracy, correctness, and good taste.

Neo-classicists delighted in symmetry and patterned design. Also, they saw works of art as being items of usefulness to mankind and thought they should be judged according to their usefulness. Thus, the major literary forms became the essay, the satire, the parody, and the burlesque which were didactic (taught moral lessons) and showed that it is better to follow the workings of the mind than the workings of the emotions.

Critics became important, showing where value lay in works and, thus, set rules for such works. They wanted to codify what made good works or bad ones based on the values seen in the classical works, such characteristics as proportion, unity, harmony, and grace in expression which can be used to delight, instruct, and correct mankind (particularly in social interaction).

Poetic diction and imagery became more conventional (because detail became less important than overall design).

Intellect was most important (growth of satire).

There was a trend toward realism which showed common actions of man.

There was a use of classical forms (tragedy, comedy, satire).

The unities became very important in drama

Action – no irrelevant episodes or sub-plots

Place – one setting or vicinity

Time – from the time it took for the play to no more than 12 or 24 hours
