Discussion 4 Assignment

Lecture 4 Video: https://web.microsoftstream.com/video/f5efa80d-334…

*(The Discussion Assignment is due tomorrow at 11:59pm ET so start this immediately)

This discussion post has three parts. For full credit, you must respond substantively to all three questions.

  1. Of the two characters Daisy and Huck, who would you argue is the most subversive (be sure to define what you mean by “subversive”), and why do you think so?
  2. Since May Bartram does all she can do to protect Marcher from knowing, how does Marcher come to know what she hopes he will never know?
  3. In both stories, the center of consciousness is a male figure (Winterbourne in Daisy Miller, Marcher in The Beast in the Jungle) who betrays his female counterpart (Daisy Miller, May Bartram). How are these betrayals like each other and how are they different from each other?

1.Of the two characters Daisy and Huck, who would you argue is the most subversive (be sure to define what you mean by “subversive”), and why do you think so?

Merriam Webstar dictionary defines subversive as : a cause of overthrow or destructionto pervert or corrupt by an undermining of morals, allegiance, or faith I think that Huck is the more subversive character because his actions had bad effects on others. Jim lost his family and was accused of killing Huck. Daisy was more of a modern free spirit than Huck and her decisions only affected herself and her reputation.

2.Since May Bartram does all she can do to protect Marcher from knowing, how does Marcher come to know what she hopes he will never know?

After her death, Marcher comes to realize that he has wasted time in trying to figure out what the secret was. He comes to regret not spending that time loving May and believes that if he had loved her better, that he would have had a happier life. However, I want to also point out that I at first thought the secret that May knew was that Marcher was gay and that was the reason why he couldn’t marry her.

3.In both stories, the center of consciousness is a male figure (Winterbourne in Daisy Miller, Marcher in The Beast in the Jungle) who betrays his female counterpart (Daisy Miller, May Bartram). How are these betrayals like each other and how are they different from each other?

They both wasted time trying to figure out the lady of interest. Both women end up dying before the men come to realize that they should have spent their time showing them more love. Winterbourne was morepreoccupied with how society and their moral rules to fully pursue Daisy. Marcher was preoccupied with finding out what May knew about him.

1) Of the two characters Daisy and Huck, who would you argue is the most subversive (be sure to define what you mean by “subversive”), and why do you think so?

Both Huck Finn and Daisy Miller share the views of not wanting to change who they are even though society is wanting them to just be like every other teenage boy or girl when they just want to be themselves and show off their individualism. Both Daisy Miller and Huck Finn show signs of asking moral questions throughout both of their stories while they both learn how they can show their individualism while living in society. I think that Huck was more subversive because he was good at coming up with stories or lies to fib just about everyone that he encounters throughout his story.

2)Since May Bartram does all she can do to protect Marcher from knowing, how does Marcher come to know what she hopes he will never know?

A year after May’s death, and an event happens at the cemetery. One autumn afternoon, he sees a male figure at a nearby grave. He is shocked when he sees the other man’s face. As the man passes Marcher, he is overwhelmed by the grief that he clearly feels, and wonders what loss he had suffered. He feels a pang, and a realization occurs. He now understands that in waiting for the event, the wait was ‘itself a portion’ of his life. He realizes that he would have been able to live if he had been able to love May. The realization that he has done nothing, lived a pointless life becomes the Beast that now pounces. His eyes darken, and he flings himself down on the tomb

3) In both stories, the center of consciousness is a male figure (Winterbourne in Daisy Miller, Marcher in The Beast in the Jungle) who betrays his female counterpart (Daisy Miller, May Bartram). How are these betrayals like each other and how are they different from each other?

Winterbourne defends Daisy feebly, but the story is about Winterbourne’s attempts and inability to define Daisy in clear moral terms. He is preoccupied with analyzing Daisy’s character because he is “addicted to observing and analyzing” feminine beauty. He wants to be able to define and categorize her, pin her down to some known class of woman that he understands. Daisy is a novelty to him though with her candor and spontaneity even though it may charm him, he is also mystified by her lack of concern for the social niceties and the rules of propriety that have been laid down by centuries of European civilization and adopted by the American community in Rome. He befriends Daisy and tries to save her but ultimately decides that she is morally beyond redemption.

The main character John Marcher shows us what happens when someone never looks beyond themselves and lives without ever truly understanding the importance of giving yourself to another person and sincerely loving them. As the story states, “the escape would have been to love [his dear friend May Bartram]; then, then, he would have lived”. It is his lack of reciprocating May Bartram’s love that dooms him to “the beast in the jungle.”

I think that both characters lead their counterparts on to believing that someday they will become more then they are only for them to only focus on themselves. I think that they only differences are that Marcher knows that there is something between himself and May, where as Winterbourne does not really care about there being anything between himself and Daisy because his is only intrigued with her behavior.

Endings Rewrite

Rewrite the endings of Daisy Miller and The Beast in the Jungle or describe how you would change their endings. (2-3 pages)

  • If an essay is below standard (below a “C”) in terms of content, style, and punctuation, you will have to rewrite it to receive a grade, so be sure not to submit first drafts.
  • Acceptable essays will graded “B” if they meet the demands of the assignment, “A” if they both meet the demands of the assignment and teach me something, and “C” if they are minimally satisfactory.
  • You may rewrite C- and B-level essays (except for the final essay), but if your essays progress in quality, you will earn a final grade based on improvement rather than an average of all assignments (of course, if you work is “upand-down,” your final grade will be more of an average grade).
